SALVAT BACH GRANT 2025
The SALVAT BACH GRANT (“SBG”), created in 2014 by Pau Jorquera and Daniel Tarrida with the backing and patronage of the Salvat Foundation, Salvat Pharmaceuticals’ charitable organisation, aims to promote the training and development of young soloist singers of early music to become a benchmark platform that offers visibility to new vocal talents.
In addition to rewarding the best soloists of each of the four vocal categories (soprano, contralto-countertenor, tenor and bass-baritone), SBG’s mission is to detect, train and give opportunities to young talented soloists from all over the world to perform in concerts, for whom winning the scholarship could be an effective impulse in the beginning of their professional careers.
With the SBG, the Salvat Foundation annually awards four soloists an economic endowment of 5,000 euros for each of the winners, and links it with their participation in a minimum of three concerts that will be programmed throughout 2023/2024, in which they will be accompanied by musicians with a solid career in the world of performance with baroque instruments and historical criteria. The SBG has the support and musical programming expertise of the Bachcelona Foundation and the Bach Collegium Barcelona.
The SBG also offers training and collaborations with renowned musicians and professionals. In previous years these have included countertenor Carlos Mena, soprano Katharine Fuge, baritone Stephan MacLeod, tenor Benjamin Bruns, baritone Jan Van der Crabben, flautist Michel Brun, soprano Miriam Feuersinger, bass Alex Ashworth and soprano María Hinojosa. In 2024 grant recipients will have the privilege of working with soprano María Hinojosa, who will give an exclusive masterclass to the four winners, in addition to sharing the stage with her at the presentation concert.

SBG recipients must be available to participate in all activities scheduled during 2024/2025 described above along with two rehearsals,
the dates of which will be duly agreed with the recipients.
Care will be taken to ensure that all soloists play a relevant role in each and every one of the concerts that the will be summoned, either in the arias of the proposed repertoire or in others added for this purpose.
Candidate requirements
Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 32 by 1 January 2025.

Terms and submission applications
The call for registration will be open n between 20 June and 30 July 2024 (both dates included).
Selection process
The organisation will carry out a first round of selection of applicants based on the analysis of the submitted documentation (CV and recent recording). Once the registration period is over and the call has ended, the organisation will decide which of the candidates will go on to the next phase of face-to-face auditions.
This decision will be final and will be communicated by e-mail.
Phases of the face-to-face auditions
The SBG organisation will carry out the selection of grant recipients in two phases of face-to-face auditions.
The accompaniment of the face-to-face phases will be done with harpsichord accompaniment at 415 Hz.
First phase
The objective of this phase is to select the candidates who will progress to the final audition.
It consists of face-to-face auditions in Basel, Madrid and Barcelona.

Repertoire:
Performance of a compulsory aria (see repertoire of compulsory arias in the section Requirements for audition), along with a baroque style piece (composed before 1750) chosen by the candidates themselves.
The schedule for the auditions and interviews will be communicated in due time via the e-mail address provided by candidates at the time of registration.
The panel’s decision will be final and will be communicated via e-mail.
This audition phase may be recorded with the aim of being able to review the recordings later if the panel deems it appropriate.
Final auditions
The aim of this phase is to select the four grant recipients of the 11th edition of the SBG 2025.
Thursday 31 October 2024: Those selected in the first phase will be summoned to carry out the final audition at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
Repertoire: This audition will consist of the compulsory aria (the same one performed in the first phase), along with one chosen by the candidate (different from the one performed in the first phase).
The jury of this edition will be made up of:

• Artistic director of the Liceu (Víctor García de Gomar or person delegated by the institution)
• Artistic director of the Palau de la Música (Mercedes Conde or person delegated by the institution)
• Lluís Vilamajó – director and soloist tenor – Jordi Maddaleno – music critic
The Foundation reserves the right to replace the members of the jury who are unable to attend the final audition.
In addition, the auditions may be attended by people whom the Salvat Foundation deems appropriate. The Foundation reserves the right to
have the auditions of the final phase open to the public.
Audition requirements
Candidates must perform two arias of baroque style.
• One required aria:
Aria Soprano: BWV 176.3 Dein sonst hell beliebter Schein
Aria contralto: BWV 69.3 Meine Seele, auf, erzähle
Aria Tenor: BWV 108.2 Mich kann kein Zweifel stören
Aria Bass: BWV 69.5 Mein Erlöser und Erhalter
• Another one freely chosen by the candidate, of baroque style composed prior to 1750.
The organisation will provide an accompanying pianist. However, if a candidate wishes to bring their own pianist, they will need to let the organisation know in advance. In this case, the organisation will happily oblige.
Awarding of the grant
The panel’s decision will be made public within a week following the completion of auditions. Their decision will be final. All candidates will receive the results via email and they will also be announced synchronously via the Salvat Foundation website www.fundacionsalvat.com
The SBG panel reserves the right to declare one or more void grants if it considers the quality of the candidates to be insufficient.
The SBG will be considered awarded once the recipient has accepted it in writing via email to salvatbecabach@fundacionsalvat.com within 15 calendar days from the date of announcement of the results. Failure to do so will result in the recipient waiving the grant.
Obligations
By accepting the grant, the chosen candidates are obliged to carry out all the activities programmed by the SBG. Failure to comply with this commitment without a duly justified cause may result in rescission of the grant.
The Foundation reserves the right to postpone or cancel the concerts it organises in case of force majeure, without this implying any possibility of a claim by the SBG recipients.
The Salvat Foundation will not cover travel expenses for the audition phases. However, once the grant recipients of the current year have been selected, the Foundation agrees to cover the travel and accommodation expenses incurred by the grant recipients that correspond to the concerts and activities directly linked to the SBG of 2025.
In the event that a choir is required for the interpretation of the proposed pieces, the grant soloists will assume the arias that correspond to them and will also participate as part of the choir, should the director consider it appropriate.
However, throughout the year, the Salvat Foundation will organise a series of concerts with several winning soloists from different editions of the SBG. These concerts are not included in the aforementioned concerts the current year’s winners of the SBG are committed to performing in.
